Quarterback Matthew Stafford’s contract has been extended for another year. However, the terms of his deal with the Rams remain a mystery for now.
Matthew Stafford has extended his contract with the Los Angeles Rams for another year. According to “ESPN,” the current NFL MVP will receive $55 million for this. Including bonus payments, his salary could rise to $60 million.
The 38-year-old’s original contract would have expired after this year, during which he is set to earn $40 million.
However, according to “NBC,” the exact structure of the quarterback’s new contract remains unclear at this time. It is also unclear whether the franchise has truly committed to two additional years.
But: Even if the Rams can terminate the contract after 2026, Stafford’s commitment likely prevents him from becoming a free agent after the upcoming season.
Stafford: What exactly does his contract look like?
A key detail regarding the exact contract terms—the percentage of guaranteed payments for 2027—is not yet known.
As the No. 1 pick in the 2009 draft, Stafford has earned more than $400 million over the course of his NFL career. In early 2021, he was traded from the Detroit Lions to the Rams. In his first season in L.A., the Rams won the Super Bowl.
How long Stafford remains with the Rams is also of great importance to his designated successor, Ty Simpson.
The Californians surprisingly selected the 23-year-old from Alabama in the first round of this year’s draft. However, as long as Stafford remains with the Rams, Simpson’s playing time is likely to be limited.
