Baker Mayfield: Start for Los Angeles Rams to be decided just before game starts

Baker Mayfield has now found his third team with the Los Angeles Rams during the current season. Mayfield’s debut could come as early as Friday night against the Las Vegas Raiders. Whether the 2018 first overall pick will start then was left open by his head coach Sean McVay.

The 2022 NFL season is one Baker Mayfield won’t soon forget. Just two years after leading the chronically unsuccessful Cleveland Browns to the playoffs, he was run off the court there.

With the Carolina Panthers as a stopover, Mayfield now landed with the Los Angeles Rams. The reigning Super Bowl champions. There he is to replace Matthew Stafford for the remaining five games of the season. Whether he will make his debut against the Las Vegas Raiders will probably be decided shortly before the start of the game.

The actual Stafford replacement John Wolford is currently classified as “questionable” with a neck injury. Accordingly, they want to see if Wolford is fit enough during the pregame warmups. Should Mayfield start, he would be the first quarterback since 2015 to start for two different teams in one season. Seven years ago, that number was four.

McVay on Mayfield: “Have to look at it “

At Wednesday’s media roundtable, McVay, who for the first time in his NFL career will finish a season with more losses than wins, at least put the starting job in perspective. “He’ll be on the squad in all likelihood. But whether he will play or just be available for an emergency, we still have to look at,” the 36-year-old explained.

The reason is not Mayfield’s fitness but the Rams’ playbook. “We’re doing everything we can to make sure he gets the information he needs. As a quarterback, you’re responsible for a lot,” McVay continued.

The head coach, however, is looking forward to working with the 2018 first overall pick. “I’m incredibly excited to work with him. Whether he plays four games or five, it doesn’t matter in the end.”

Starting quarterback Matthew Stafford is on the Injured Reserve list and will miss the rest of the season.
