Super Bowl hero Malcolm Butler arrested

Malcolm Butler recently announced his permanent retirement from the NFL. Now he has been arrested and will stand trial

Former New England Patriots star Malcolm Butler was arrested this month on suspicion of drunk driving in North Providence, Rhode Island. This is according to a police report.

Butler became a Super Bowl hero in 2015 when he caught the decisive interception against the Seattle Seahawks to help the Patriots win the Vince Lombardi Trophy.

He stayed in New England until 2017 and then signed with the Tennessee Titans (2018-2020) and the Arizona Cardinals (2021) before ending his career for the time being. He attempted a comeback with the Patriots in 2022, but suffered an injury before the start of the season and was subsequently released. Butler only announced his final retirement on March 9 of this year.

First the resignation, then the arrest

The arrest took place on March 16, exactly one week after his resignation. A police officer noticed that Butler was blocking a lane on Mineral Spring Avenue in Rhode Island with his white Mercedes. The officer approached the ex-NFL star and noticed a strong odor of alcohol on his breath, slurred speech and bloodshot eyes.

Butler allegedly refused to take a series of breathalyzer tests. As a result, he was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol. He will stand trial on Thursday and face charges of drunk driving and two misdemeanors (refusing a chemical test, blocking a road).
