NFL mourns running back legend Jim Brown

The Cleveland Browns of the NFL’s professional football league are mourning the loss of club icon Jim Brown. The former running back died at the age of 87, the franchise announced Friday.

Brown’s wife Monique shared on Instagram that her husband “peacefully fell asleep” at their Los Angeles home on Thursday night.

Brown played for the Browns from 1957 to 1965 and won an NFL title with the team in 1964. He was named the league’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) three times.

Brown ran for at least 100 yards in 58 of his 118 main-round appearances and never missed a game. He broke the 1000-yard mark in seven seasons.

Brown to play after career ends

“Legend. Leader. Activist. Visionary. It is impossible to describe the deep love and gratitude we feel for being a small part of Jim’s incredible life and legacy,” the Browns shared.

“We mourn his passing, but celebrate the indelible light he brought into the world.”

Brown became an actor after his career, starring in films including “The Dirty Dozen,” “Ice Station Zebra,” “The Running Man” and “Mars Attacks!”
