NFL: Concussions at an all-time low – new kickoff rule paying off

Concussions are a big issue in the NFL cosmos. Now the league has announced some encouraging news. The newly introduced Dynamic Kickoff Rule is also paying off.

This news should please not only NFL fans, but also players and officials from the 32 teams.

As the league announced on Thursday evening, the number of concussions has reached an all-time low. According to the league, a total of 182 concussions were diagnosed.

This represents a 17 percent decrease in concussions compared to the previous season. This applies not only to the regular season games themselves, but also to all training sessions and preseason games.

Compared to the average for the 2021 to 2023 seasons, the number decreased by twelve percent. The few concussions in the preseason were also a factor in the historic value. These also reached the lowest point since data collection began in 2015.

The NFL cites the “biggest safety improvement in on-field helmet use since 2021, enforcement of safety rules and overall efforts to further promote a culture of safety” as reasons for the positive development.

NFL: Dynamic Kickoff Rule ensures large increase in returns

In addition to the decline in concussions, the league is also seeing fewer serious injuries to the lower extremities, which overall cause the longest player downtime. Compared to 2021, NFL players missed 14 percent less playing time due to such injuries.

According to the league, the new dynamic kickoff rule also played a major role in this. The play caused 48 percent fewer concussions than the average for the 2021–2023 seasons. In addition, the number of returns in the regular season increased by a whopping 57 percent.
