NFL: Commissioner Roger Goodell is considering founding a professional flag football league

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell confirmed that the NFL is working on its own flag football league. There could be both a men’s and a women’s league.

The NFL could soon take flag football to a whole new level. League Commissioner Roger Goodell announced on Tuesday that the NFL is currently considering founding a professional flag football league – possibly even with separate leagues for men and women.

Flag football has become increasingly important in recent years, not least due to the NFL’s decision to replace the classic Pro Bowl game with a flag football match.

In addition, the league played a decisive role in flag football being introduced as an Olympic discipline for men and women from 2028.

But it is not only US athletes who see an opportunity in the sport: according to Goodell, many international NFL players would also like to represent their home country.

“We have a lot of international players who want to represent their country,” said Goodell.

In addition to the Olympics, flag football could now also have a future at the club level. A professional league would draw even more attention to the sport.

Flag football is a non-contact variant of American football in which the game is stopped by tackling an opposing player’s “flag” (a cloth bag worn on the belt).

The game promotes speed, teamwork and technique by largely avoiding physical confrontation.

It is becoming increasingly popular as it offers an easy way to enjoy and play the sport without the high risk of injury associated with traditional football.
