NFL Black Monday in the ticker: new Jets coach? Talk with long-time NFL coach

In the NFL, Black Monday is upon us. Who will be fired, who is being considered as a successor?

In the NFL, the day before is the one that coaches probably fear most: Black Monday.

On the Monday after the final game day of the regular season, countless coaches have to vacate their jobs.

In the 2024 season, three head coaches were already let go during the regular season. Robert Saleh (New York Jets), Dennis Allen (New Orleans Saints) and Matt Eberflus (Chicago Bears) had to pack their things.

Which head coaches will follow? Which coordinators have to go? Who are potential successors? And which general managers will be hired?

The coaching search continues at full speed for the New York Jets. After the franchise has already confirmed that talks have been held with Ron Rivera, further interviews with an ex-NFL head coach are likely.

As reported by The Athletic, Mike Vrabel will be the second coach that the Jets want to talk to about the vacant coaching position.

An initial interview is scheduled to take place as early as Friday. Vrabel served as a personnel consultant for the Cleveland Browns during the season, but the 49-year-old’s contract expires at the end of the season.

Vrabel was head coach of the Tennessee Titans from 2018 to 2023.

In addition to a new head coach, the New York Jets are also looking for a new general manager. The team bosses have now spoken to Louis Riddick, as the franchise officially announced.

The 55-year-old currently works for the TV networks ESPN and ABC as an NFL and college analyst. Before he started working at ESPN in 2013, he worked in the front office of the Washington Commanders and Philadelphia Eagles.

Riddick is already the third candidate the Jets interviewed for the GM position. Previously, there were talks with former Falcons GM Thomas Dimitroff and former Titans GM Jon Robinson.

After the dismissal of Robert Saleh, the New York Jets are looking for a head coach for the upcoming season. Now the franchise has announced that they have interviewed Ron Rivera for the vacant position.

Rivera was most recently head coach of the Washington Commanders from 2020 to 2023, having previously coached the Carolina Panthers from 2011 to 2019, leading them to the Super Bowl during that time and twice picking up the NFL Coach of the Year award.
