The big offensive fireworks failed to materialise: The Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Green Bay Packers 13-7 in a hard-fought game. Packers quarterback Jordan Love only found his rhythm in the final phase of the game. At the same time, the Arizona Cardinals won without their stars. The 10 p.m. games at a glance.
Green Bay Packers at Kansas City Chiefs 7:13
No Aaron Rodgers, no Party! Despite a clear improvement in the second half, the Green Bay Packers lost the NFL top game at the Kansas City Chiefs with 7:13.
Rodgers replacement Jordan Love initially looked like a foreign body in a chaotic Packers offence. Only in the course of the third quarter did the 23-year-old slowly find his rhythm – but the comeback came too late.
In his first NFL start, Love completed 19 of his 34 passes and recorded 190 yards, a touchdown and an interception. After his 20-yard touchdown pass to Allen Lazard five minutes before the end, the Chiefs showed good time management and did not give the ball back to the Packers in the final phase.
The fact that it remained exciting at all for a long time was also due to the Chiefs offence, which is still far removed from the power of days gone by. Patrick Mahomes threw for 166 yards and a touchdown, only 20 of his 37 passes reached the man.
Kicker Harrison Butker converted two field goals (24 yards and 55 yards), Travis Kelce caught the only Chiefs touchdown of the day.
The Packers now stand at a 7-2 record, while for the Chiefs (5-4) the playoff race in the AFC West is now wide open again.
Los Angeles Chargers at Philadelphia Eagles 27-24
It was back and forth, up and down. The Philadelphia Eagles and the Los Angeles Chargers gave each other nothing. At the end of a thrilling game in which the lead changed several times, the Chargers finally won 27:24.
Quarterback Justin Herbert was the outstanding man with 356 passing yards, two touchdown passes and one touchdown. But the final point belonged to kicker Dustin Hopkins, who converted a 29-yard field goal with two seconds left to win the game.
Before that, the Chargers had laboriously worked their way into field-goal range over six minutes and had taken so much time off the clock that the Eagles had no chance of a suitable response.
Quarterback Jalen Hurts completed 11 of his 17 passes for 162 yards and a touchdown. The 23-year-old also ran for 62 yards.
With the win, the Chargers are now tied with the Las Vegas Raiders at the top of their division with a 5-3 record. Along with the Denver Broncos (5-4) and Kansas City Chiefs (5-4), the AFC West is wide open.
Arizona Cardinals at San Francisco 49ers 31-17
Even without their injured star players Kyler Murray and DeAndre Hopkins, the Arizona Cardinals remain one of the best teams in the NFL. Head coach Kliff Kingsbury’s team left no stone unturned at the San Francisco 49ers and won clearly and deservedly with 31:17.
The 35-year-old Murray substitute Colt McCoy used all his experience to lead his team to its eighth win of the season with 249 passing yards and a touchdown. Running back James Conner also had a strong day, recording 96 rushing yards and two touchdowns.
The Cardinals pulled away early and were already ahead by 24 points midway through the third quarter. Led by Jimmy Garoppolo (28/40, 326 yards, two touchdowns, one interception), the 49ers came back briefly, but the victory for Arizona was never seriously threatened.
Garoppolo was sacked five times and Cardinals linebacker Markus Golden was the quarterback’s nightmare with three sacks.
While Arizona remains on fire with an 8-1 record, fans of the San Francisco 49ers (3-5) must slowly but surely prepare for a season without playoffs.
