More than six years after his last NFL game to date, quarterback Colin Kaepernick has not given up hope of a return. Now 35, he still sees himself capable of competing in the NFL
Former quarterback Colin Kaepernick continues to hope for a return to the NFL. “I just want to get the opportunity to show what I can do on the field. Judge me on that, not your political views,” the 35-year-old told Sports Illustrated.
By his own admission, he continues to train five to six days a week and is convinced he can still throw for more than 60 yards. “I’m going to keep pushing,” Kaepernick said, “I’m going to keep fighting for it because I know I can make plays on the field.”
Time and time again, Kaepernick has been allowed to introduce himself to teams in recent years. “Every practice, every opportunity I’ve had to show that off, the feedback has always been positive. From ‘He’s still a top player’ to ‘The workout was great; it was better than expected,'” he said.
Kaepernick: “Heard a lot of excuses “
His last game in the NFL so far was more than six years ago, after he left the San Francisco 49ers at the end of the 2016 season. Previously, he had caused national controversy by taking a knee during the US anthem before games as a sign against inequality and discrimination.
Kaepernick then also became a political issue and was unable to find a new team. “I’ve heard a lot of apologies over the years,” the former Super Bowl participant looks back.
Last year, he was allowed to interview with the Las Vegas Raiders, but also received a rejection. Instead, the franchise opted for Jarrett Stidham and Nick Mullens as backups for Derek Carr. “Obviously there’s something else in that decision. To me, that’s typically what it ends up being, or what it’s been for the last seven years,” he said.
