Pittsburgh Steelers: Mitch Trubisky’s future open after disaster start

Mike Tomlin’s choice of Mitch Trubisky as the Steelers’ starting quarterback is raising more and more questions. Fans are clamouring for the rookie QB.

Munich/Pittsburgh – It was one of the most discussed questions before the start of the NFL season: Who will succeed the retired Ben Roethlisberger as starting quarterback of the Pittsburgh Steelers?

It wasn’t until early September, just days before the first day of games, that coach Mike Tomlin chose Mitch Trubisky.

“We’re very pleased with what Mitch has shown us,” Tomlin told NFL Network at the time.

But less than three weeks later, numerous Steelers fans, at least, are not at all pleased with their coach’s decision.

Steelers fans are already calling for Kenny Pickett

First fans chanted for rookie quarterback Kenny Pickett during the team’s 14-17 home loss to the New England Patriots on Game 2 at Acrisure Stadium.

First fans chanted for rookie quarterback Kenny Pickett during the team’s 14-17 home loss to the New England Patriots at Acrisure Stadium.

Calls that grew louder after the Steelers’ third game of the young season. Because the team from Pittsburgh also left the field as losers after the Thursday Night Game.

They lost 17-29 at the Cleveland Browns, and Tomlin was promptly asked about his quarterback at the press conference afterwards.

Tomlin holds on to Trubisky

When asked if he was considering a change at the quarterback position, the head coach simply replied, “Definitely no.”

So Tomlin is still expressing confidence in his starting quarterback.

The numbers, however, don’t necessarily favor Trubisky. Against the Browns, he did get over 200 passing yards (207) for the first time this season. But among them was not a single touchdown pass.

The only touchdown he scored in this game came in the second quarter.

In the two games before that against the Cincinnati Bengals and the Patriots, his performance was also capable of improvement, with only one touchdown pass in each case.

Lousy numbers from Trubisky against Patriots

Especially against the Patriots, however, he failed to do much of anything – making arguments for keeping his regular spot few and far between.

And the tasks in the coming weeks will be harder rather than easier. First of all, the New York Jets are a beatable opponent. But then it’s blow by blow.

Buffalo Bills, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Miami Dolphins, Philadelphia Eagles: these are the names of the next four opponents. The Steelers will play three of the four games away from home.

So it is quite possible that the team from Pennsylvania will have a record of 2-6 after Week 8. After that, it will be all the more difficult to make the playoffs.

Tomlin doesn’t have much time left to turn the Steelers around – with Trubisksy or without.
