Tom Brady has revealed that he gave rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders some advice. In fact, he gave him several pieces of advice.
Tom Brady knows roughly how Shedeur Sanders feels. The son of legend Deion Sanders fell almost unchecked into the fifth round of the last NFL Draft.
Brady didn’t experience anywhere near the hype Sanders did when he was drafted in 2000, but he also fell hard.
While Sanders went 144th overall, Brady was only the 199th pick. The rest is glorious NFL history.
Brady was asked on the “Impaulsive Podcast” why so many teams passed on the young quarterback after he was considered a top-ten pick leading up to the draft.
Brady with a message to Sanders
“That’s a good question,” Brady said. “I wasn’t involved in any part of the evaluation process.” Brady is a minority owner of the Las Vegas Raiders, but they passed on seven opportunities. Instead, they opted for Cam Miller as their young signal caller in the sixth round.
Brady sent Sanders a message during the draft: “I was pick 199. So who better to explain what that really means than me? Use that as motivation. You’ll get your chances – take them.”
Even the fact that the Cleveland Browns passed on Sanders six times and picked rookie quarterback Dillon Gabriel ahead of him in the third round should be “used as motivation,” according to Brady. No matter where you end up, it’s only your performance that counts. What will you do when you get your chance?”
Another important piece of advice Sanders should take to heart: as a playmaker, he has to be a leader and win over the locker room with his performance as a rookie.
“He has to deliver every day,” Brady said. ‘Being a leader means: Do you take care of your teammates? Do you care about what you want to achieve together? Those are rules one and two.’
According to Brady, that’s how you earn respect, because you’re not just talking to the 22-year-old rookie, but also to the 32-year-old veteran. “You talk to the coach who doesn’t want to get fired. You talk to the team owner who invested in you. And you talk to the entire staff team – whose jobs depend on you functioning,” Brady said.
