Pete Carroll is returning to the NFL. The long-standing head coach of the Seattle Seahawks is taking over the Las Vegas Raiders.
The Las Vegas Raiders have found a new head coach.
As the franchise confirmed on social media, the 73-year-old will take over the team in the coming weeks.
Carroll has been the favorite for the position in recent days. On Friday afternoon, several media outlets reported an agreement between the two parties.
The 73-year-old was most recently head coach of the Seattle Seahawks from 2010 to 2024. According to an ESPN report, the contract is said to be for three years, with an option for an additional year.
This means that the AFC West is full of star head coaches. Carroll (Raiders), Andy Reid (Kansas City Chiefs), Sean Payton (Denver Broncos) and Jim Harbaugh (Los Angeles Chargers) have a combined total of 20 Conference Championship Game appearances and nine Super Bowl appearances (five wins).
Pete Carroll won the Super Bowl in 2013
Carroll has a special connection with Harbaugh. Both have fought many battles with Seattle and San Francisco in the NFC West and with USC and Stanford at the college level.
Carroll’s coaching career began at the college level, where he coached various teams as an assistant coach. The coaching legend had his first NFL stop with the Buffalo Bills in 1984 – also as an assistant.

Ten years later, he was head coach for the New York Jets for one year. After three years as head coach of the New England Patriots – against whom he later lost in the Super Bowl with the Seahawks – Carroll went back to college in the 2000s.
He coached the USC Trojans until 2009, after which the long stint in Seattle followed. In 2013, he won the Super Bowl with the Seahawks.
