Zach Wilson had to watch after his playful drought and his verbal misstep. Instead, his namesake Garrett Wilson stood out in the New York Jets’ seventh win of the season. The Chicago Bears only held their own for one half.
Munich – The New York Jets won the duel of the backup quarterbacks and thus once again answered a loss to the New England Patriots with a victory. After an even first half, the team from the “Big Apple” won 31:10 (17:10) against the Chicago Bears.
Mike White started for the Jets because Zach Wilson did not know how to take responsibility publicly after his recent poor performances a week ago. The Bears, for their part, had to do without Justin Fields, who had injured his shoulder, and his replacement Trevor Siemian, who suffered a bruise to his lateral abdominal muscles during warm-up, but gritted his teeth.
Right in the first drive, White showed what he was made of. He led the “Gang Green” across the field with lightning speed and passed to Garrett Wilson from eight yards out for a touchdown – despite a holding call by his opponent.
Bears turn game around – Jets holder fumbles on FG attempt
The Bears at least got as far as the Red Zone, but then had to settle for a 22-yard field goal by Cairo Santos. But at the beginning of the second quarter the visitors also scored a touchdown – after a four-yard pass from Siemian to Byron Pringle.
When the Jets set out to equalise a little later with a 36-yard field goal by Greg Zuerlein, his holder fumbled. Braden Mann slipped the wet egg through his fingers. At least he saved the situation by throwing the ball forward. The result: Incomplete pass and turnover on downs.
Wilson with a 54-yard touchdown – Jackson injured
But for the New Yorkers it seemed to have been a hello-wake-up experience. Because on the next drive Wilson caught the ball again and – also aided by a foot injury to safety Eddie Jackson in this scene – returned 54 yards to the end zone. Before the break, Zuerlein added a 57-yard field goal to make it 17-10.
Both offenses started the second half cautiously before White threw his third touchdown pass – for 22 yards to Elijah Moore. This was the first time a team really pulled away. And then it worked out on the ground as Ty Johnson worked his way through the Bears defence and returned a total of 32 yards.
Zuerlein tried again from 53 yards in the final quarter, but the egg flew right past the uprights. No problem, not much more went on the other side. Siemian ended the match with an interception by C.J. Mosley.
White and Wilson deliver for the Jets
White was impressive with 315 passing yards for three touchdown passes in his first start of the season. Rookie Wilson also made his mark on the game with 95 receiving yards for two receiving touchdowns. On the other side, Siemian finished with 179 passing yards for one touchdown pass with one interception. Equanimeous St. Brown was not a factor with seven receiving yards.
While it was New York’s seventh win in eleven games, Chicago lost for the fifth straight time and is now 3-9. For the Bears, it continues next Sunday with a divisional duel against the Green Bay Packers. The Jets take on the Minnesota Vikings at the same time.
