What are the Patriots doing with their draft pick? What’s obvious: The team has a lot of interest in LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels. In return, they’re more than present at his Pro Day.
Louisiana State University, or LSU for short, held its annual Pro Day last Wednesday. Prospects for the draft can show off their skills one last time in front of NFL scouts and coaches.
Of course, the school’s two top players who will be available in the upcoming draft were also there: Quarterback Jayden Daniels and wide receiver Malik Nabers. Both are expected to be drafted in the first half of the first round.
Jayden Daniels is most often slotted third overall to the New England Patriots in various mock drafts by various experts.
It would make sense because the Patriots decided to trade away their first-round quarterback from 2021 in Mac Jones.
The Patriots are making no secret of their interest. While it hasn’t been verbally confirmed, a nine-person (!) delegation from Foxborough flew south to check out the Heisman Trophy winner’s workout. Normally two to four people from a franchise are present at Pro Days
Lots of talk for Head Coach Mayo
The New England travel group was led by Head Coach Jerod Mayo and Offensive Coordinator Alex van Pelt. The former did one thing above all: hold talks. According to several sources close to the franchise, the rookie coach had an “extended” conversation with 21-year-old quarterback Daniels the night before.
He also sought an exchange of words with Brian Kelly, LSU’s head coach and grinder of the diamond named Daniels. This conversation also reportedly lasted several minutes.
Who the Patriots will ultimately choose in the draft is still up in the air. The fact is, however, that they are taking a very close look at the candidates for the pick.
