Head Coach Andy Reid recently expressed caution regarding Patrick Mahomes’ return. GM Brett Veach is significantly more optimistic on the matter.
Andy Reid remained cautious. The Kansas City Chiefs head coach announced that superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes would be able to participate in the OTAs starting May 26.
However, he avoided giving specific details about the playmaker’s progress. In December, Mahomes suffered a severe knee injury against the Los Angeles Chargers. Mahomes is currently working on his comeback during rehab.
General Manager Brett Veach has now provided a more detailed update on his star quarterback’s progress.
Kansas City Chiefs: GM finds Patrick Mahomes inspiring
It’s inspiring to watch, Veach said in an interview with SiriusXM NFL Radio. “What he’s doing right now is extraordinary. He’s well ahead of schedule. The biggest challenge will likely be protecting him from himself.”
Mahomes’ goal is to make a comeback in Week 1 of the new season, which is in September. Even though there are a good nine months between his injury and his return, that’s a major athletic feat with such severe knee injuries.
Mahomes is setting a brisk pace on the way there. He’s at the Chiefs’ training facility every day. “And even if he’s away for a few days—say, over the weekend with his family in Dallas—he takes one of our trainers with him,” Veach reveals.
And Veach is certain: “When we head to training camp, he’ll want to go full throttle. We’ll probably have to slow him down a bit.” That would be at the end of July.
Nevertheless, the Chiefs’ GM doesn’t want to give a specific timeline for his return or for more intensive training. “But you know Pat—his character, his ambition. And all I can say is: We’re in a really good place right now.”
