The Cleveland Browns’ rookie quarterback is blessed with a great deal of self-confidence.
The Cleveland Browns’ quarterbacks rarely lack self-confidence, and rookie playmaker Taylen Green is no exception.
Standing 6 feet 6 inches tall, weighing 231 pounds, and posting a top time of 4.36 seconds on the 40-yard dash at the Scouting Combine, the young signal-caller has impressive credentials. And his self-confidence is certainly in abundance.
“To be honest, no,” he replied, according to “cleveland.com,” at his team’s rookie minicamp when asked if there was a quarterback he compared his potential to.
“I’d say Lamar [Jackson], of course, but he’s not 6 feet 6 inches tall. Josh Allen comes close, but I weigh 229 pounds. He weighs about 258 pounds. My dad says I remind him of Randall Cunningham.“
He continued: ”I really don’t think there’s anyone like me. Not in a cocky way or anything, but just with a little confidence. There’s no one who moves like I do, who’s as big as I am.”
Taylen Green impresses with his athleticism
That he’s got what it takes athletically has been beyond question since the Combine, if not before. His 40-yard dash time was the second-fastest by a quarterback since 2003, and he also impressed on the vertical jump, for example.
The Texas-born quarterback threw for more than 2,700 yards in each of his two seasons with the Arkansas Razorbacks and recorded at least 15 touchdowns. He also added at least 600 rushing yards and eight rushing touchdowns.
After the 23-year-old was drafted, analyst Daniel Jeremiah said Green was an “incredibly rare freak.” However, there are also reasons why he wasn’t selected until the sixth round. His elite athleticism needs to be refined with more finesse and polish as a quarterback.
Exciting quarterback competition with the Browns
His coach, the new Browns head coach Todd Monken, has already spoken positively about Green. “It’s exciting to have him here and just let him play. Of course, now is the time for him to get some game experience.”
He continued: “Once we start OTAs, that will change significantly. I’m still happy for him, though. He’s a great guy, and everything we’ve heard about him so far has proven to be true.”
Meanwhile, the quarterback situation in Cleveland remains intriguing even without the rookie. Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders are battling for the starting job, and Dillon Gabriel—just like Sanders in his second year—is also mentioned as part of the competition. For the confident rookie, there’s no room there for now.
The sixth-round pick is well aware of this, despite his bold statements. “They have experience in the league and a track record of success at a high level,” Green said of the Browns’ other quarterbacks. “So I’m just the young upstart. I feel like a rookie again and am just trying to soak everything in and learn quickly.”
