After Jonathon Cooper was released on bail, he was arrested again one week after his initial arrest.
NFL player Jonathon Cooper of the Denver Broncos was arrested again on Thursday after violating a protective order issued against him. This is according to arrest records from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.
A week ago, the pass rusher had already been arrested on suspicion of domestic violence and property damage.
At that time, the linebacker was arrested by officers from the Parker Police Department in Denver and later transferred to the Douglas County Jail. Following a court hearing the next day, the 28-year-old was released on bail.
NFL: Broncos Star Arrested for Violating a Restraining Order
Cooper was arrested at 10:07 p.m. on charges of violating a restraining order and harassment by repeated phone calls. A court hearing is scheduled for Friday morning.
His most recent arrest follows an incident on June 4 in which he and his girlfriend were detained by the Parker Police Department following an argument and a physical altercation.
According to an affidavit, the girlfriend accused Cooper of cheating on her, which allegedly led to an argument. The woman stated that she took his cell phone and threw it across the room.
The 28-year-old, in turn, testified that he grabbed his girlfriend by the upper arms to get his cell phone. When she reached for his cell phone again, he said he “pressed his neck against her neck to prevent her from getting it.”
Additional charges against Cooper
On Thursday, according to court records, two additional charges were filed against Cooper: second-degree aggravated assault by choking and third-degree simple assault.
“We are disappointed by the news of Jonathon Cooper’s arrest on Thursday and continue to review this matter,” the Broncos said in a statement.
Cooper pleaded not guilty on Monday to the original charges of third-degree assault in a domestic violence case.
The 28-year-old has participated in the Broncos’ offseason program, including Thursday’s practice. After Thursday’s OTA practice, Broncos head coach Sean Payton said he had a “long conversation” with the pass rusher about his arrest.
