In a documentary, the Patriots’ protagonists provide harrowing insights into their emotional lives after the dramatic defeat in the 2008 Super Bowl against the New York Giants.
It’s been just over 16 years since the New England Patriots lost one of the most dramatic Super Bowls in history.
But Tom Brady still remembers exactly how miserable he felt after his Patriots’ 14-17 loss to the New York Giants in Super Bowl XLII.
“We were devastated. It was devastating,” Brady said in the “Apple TV” documentary about the Patriots era.
What hurt him most was the missed opportunity to achieve something historic. Something that to this day only the Miami Dolphins accomplished in the 1972 season: going undefeated for the entire season, including the playoffs and Super Bowl.
“That was our historic game. That would have been everything. We were as devastated as you can be. We couldn’t sleep. We couldn’t sleep for a long time,” recalled the star quarterback, who was beaten by Giants quarterback Eli Manning in February 2008.
Brady’s teammate at the time, Randy Moss, probably still has nightmares today thinking about the decisive play that may have cost the Pats the win.”
19 seconds before the end, he had to catch a long pass from Brady to give his team the chance to at least reach overtime with a field goal.
The wide receiver got past two defenders who were covering him, but the pass was deflected and fell to the ground before Moss could get his hands on it. “That still haunts me,” Moss said. “My fingertips touched it. “
Patriots president Kraft: “I’ve never seen that before “
Patriots president Jonathan Kraft also gave an impressive account of the state of the team after the defeat when he entered the dressing room.
“I see the guys throwing up and crying on the floor,” he said in the documentary. “I’ve never seen that before. I’ve never seen that before, ever.”
Brady could take the defeat in his stride. He had already won the Super Bowl three times at that point and would later win it a total of four more times.
But Randy Moss never won a ring in his NFL career.
