Kansas City Chiefs: Mahomes and the defence have overcome their low

A month ago, the Kansas City Chiefs had a negative record and gave many puzzlers. At the latest with the win against the Dallas Cowboys, the fourth triumph in a row, the interim crisis of form has been overcome.

Kansas City/Munich – The Dallas Cowboys had travelled to Kansas City’s Arrowhead Stadium with a lot of confidence. The offense around quarterback Dak Prescott had averaged 31.6 points and 433.9 yards in the previous games.

However, they were unable to find a way against the Kansas City Chiefs defence and failed to score a touchdown.

Chis Jones with 3.5 sacks – “everyone was fit “

And it wasn’t that long ago that their defence was one of the weakest in the league. In the first seven games this season, they allowed an average of 28.9 points. “It’s not how you get going, it’s how you finish,” said defensive end Chris Jones, who gave Prescott a hard time with 3.5 sacks.

“It’s a marathon, not a sprint. You go through some adversity in a season. We had a lot of injuries. But we improved our defensive chemistry and got the guys back in shape. I think that was the first time in four weeks that everyone was fit and on the court together. That’s very important for this defence.”

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes also knew he had his defence to thank for the 19-9 win over Dallas. “Since the second half in the Tennessee game, the defence has been playing a lot better,” the playmaker said.

After the Titans loss, the turnaround came

It was the low point of the season when the preseason Super Bowl finalists went down flat in Week 7 against the Titans with 3:27 to play. However, the defence had stabilised during the game and allowed no more points in the third and fourth quarters.

Nevertheless, the false start was perfect. The Chiefs had a negative record with three wins and four losses – an almost unimaginable scenario for this superstar squad.

The weak point at that time, however, was not only the defence, but also the unusually flawed attack. Even Mahomes made an uncharacteristic number of mistakes, throwing nine interceptions in the first seven games.

“The game against Tennessee was lost then because the offense wasn’t working,” Mahomes explained. “The games we won, we won because of our defence. People were used to our offense putting up the top numbers. But I always pointed out how well our defence was playing.”

The strong showing against the Cowboys would have proven that once again: “Stopping an offence like that that put up that many yards and points is impressive.” In the past four games, the defence allowed an average of only 11.75 points.

As a result, all four games were won, putting the Chiefs back on track for the playoffs with a record of 7-4.

Mahomes overcomes error-proneness

Mahomes also adjusted his error-proneness. In the four triumphs he made only two interceptions. He was not to blame for the turnover against the Cowboys because the ball was tipped by Travis Kelce and could only be caught by Cowboys safety Jayron Kearse as a result.

Mahomes is the NFL’s passing leader with 3200 yards. The running game is merely NFL average with an average of 111.9 yards. Still, it’s strong enough to make the offense’s system of play difficult for opponents to predict.

“Every week offers great challenges,” Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said. “I’m talking about wins and losses, ups and downs. Teams are considered favourites and get beat, it’s crazy.”

That makes it all the more important to take every task seriously, he said. “You have to take each game as it comes. We haven’t proved anything yet.” That’s why he didn’t want to hang the success against the Cowboys, who have been so strong so far, on the big bell: “You can talk about everything after the season. But it’s not the time for that yet. “
