Kansas City Chiefs beat Las Vegas Raiders after 17-point deficit.

The Kansas City Chiefs narrowly win the Monday Night Game against the Las Vegas Raiders, overcoming a sizeable deficit in the process. A referee decision causes controversy

Munich – Successful Monday Night Game for the Kansas City Chiefs. The franchise around quarterback superstar Patrick Mahomes won 30-29 against the Las Vegas Raiders to conclude the fifth NFL game day and is unchallenged at the top of the AFC West with a record of 4-1. The Raiders, on the other hand, are in last place with only one win and four losses.

Initially, it did not look as if the Chiefs would have reason to celebrate. A 58-yard touchdown pass from Derek Carr to Davante Adams, a 1-yard run by Josh Jacobs and a field goal gave the visitors a quick 17-0 lead. But then came the turnaround.

Mahomes and his tight end Travis Kelce really turned it on. The playmaker threw four touchdown passes to his long-time playmaker. Bitter: Kelce had to leave the field early with back problems. For Mahomes, the 17-point comeback was the biggest of his NFL career to date.

Records for Chiefs kicker Wright

A record, meanwhile, was also set by Chiefs kicker Mathew Wright. With the clock running out in the second quarter, he nailed a 59-yard field goal between the goalposts. Never before had anyone at Arrowhead Stadium successfully sunk a kick from that distance.

There was also a historic moment for Raiders quarterback Derek Carr. With his first touchdown to receiver Davante Adams, he scored the 200th touchdown of his career. Interesting fun fact: All three playmakers drafted ahead of him in 2014 – namely Blake Bortles, Johnny Manziel and Teddy Bridgewater – have combined to throw just 182 touchdown passes.

Referee call overshadows game

Meanwhile, the connection with new receiver Davante Adams again proved to be a good one. Towards the end of the last quarter Carr threw another long touchdown pass, this time for 48 yards. But it was still not enough for a victory.

The match was overshadowed by a controversial referee decision. A roughing-the-passer call against Chiefs tackle Chris Jones looked like a clear mistake in favour of the Raiders, even after repeated video analysis. Jones had actually knocked the ball out of the signal caller’s hand, which should have resulted in a turnover.
