The sons of numerous former NFL stars were selected in the 2024 draft. Marvin Harrison, Ed McCaffrey and Jerry Rice were among those to celebrate
The 2024 draft is in the books!
In addition to numerous records, it was particularly noticeable that many of the names of tomorrow’s stars are likely to be familiar to fans.
Several sons of former NFL faces were selected over the past three days and are now preparing to follow in their fathers’ footsteps.
Marvin Harrison Jr. made the start, with the Arizona Cardinals securing the wide receiver with the 4th pick. Father Marvin Sr. is a member of the Hall of Fame and won the Super Bowl alongside star quarterback Peyton Manning in 2007
Just one pick later, the Los Angeles Chargers selected offensive tackle Joe Alt. His father John also played 13 seasons as a tackle for the Kansas City Chiefs and was twice named to the Pro Bowl.
In the second round, the Cincinnati Bengals secured defensive tackle Kris Jenkins. His father of the same name played the same position for a total of ten seasons in the NFL for the Carolina Panthers and New York Jets.
Outside linebacker Jonah Elliss was selected by the Denver Broncos in the third round. His father, Luther Ellis, was once the NFL’s highest-paid defensive tackle and played for the Detroit Lions for nine seasons. He also played one final season for Denver in 2004.
Sons of NFL legends Jerry Rice and Ed McCaffrey drafted
With the 100th pick, the Washington Commanders secured receiver Luke McCaffrey, brother of 49ers star Christian McCaffrey, in the third round. His father Ed played as a receiver for 13 years in the NFL for the New York Giants, 49ers and Denver Broncos and won the Super Bowl three times
In the 7th round, the Chargers then secured another prominent name and signed receiver Brenden Rice with the 225th pick. Father Jerry is a Hall of Famer, won the Super Bowl three times and set numerous receiving records in 20 years in the league
Sons of Frank Gore and Terrell Owens find teams after draft
Frank Gore Jr.’s name wasn’t called during the draft, but there was reason to celebrate a little later. The running back was signed by the Buffalo Bills as an undrafted free agent.
His father Frank can look back on a 16-year professional career and ranks third in the NFL’s all-time rankings with 16,000 rushing yards. Gore Sr. also played one season in Buffalo in 2019
The son of Hall of Fame receiver Terrell Owens will begin his career in the same place as his father. Terique, who is also a receiver, signed as an undrafted free agent with the San Francisco 49ers.
Owens Sr. was drafted in the third round by the Niners in 1996, spent eight years with the franchise and was voted a Pro Bowler six times and an All-Pro five times.
