Washington Commanders: Owner rules out Redskins return

2020 the then Washington Redskins officially changed their controversial team name after years of criticism. After the recent change of ownership, rumours about a possible return of the old name increased. This has now been denied by one of the owners of the Commanders.

The Washington Commanders are apparently not turning back the clocks and renaming themselves the Redskins again. That’s the rumour that’s been making the rounds lately.

As the “Washington Post” now reports, one of the owners of the franchise, Mitchell Rales, provided a clear answer to the question of whether a return to the old team name was being considered: “That ship has sailed. We are not going to discuss the past any more. We’re about the future.”

Rales is part of the Josh Harris-led ownership group that acquired the Capital franchise from Daniel Snyder for $6.05 billion in July.

Washington Commanders: renaming likely

Commanders president Jason Wright had also categorically ruled out a return to the Redskins name in an interview on “106.7 The Fan. “It’s out of the question. Full stop.”

In 2020, the franchise had been given the placeholder name Washington Football Team before finally being christened Washington Commanders in February 2022.

According to the Washington Post, another renaming is not out of the question. The focus of the new ownership group, however, is currently on the coming season. And on restoring the fans’ trust, which was shaken by scandal-ridden owner Dan Snyder.
