Aaron Rodgers apparently pushed for a trade from the Green Bay Packers as early as 2021. For this, he and his advisor put the Packers president under a lot of pressure and even demanded the dismissal of the GM.
After much back and forth, Aaron Rodgers finally moved from the Green Bay Packers to the New York Jets in the 2023 offseason. However, according to one report, it had been the star quarterback’s plan to leave the franchise for some time.
According to The Athletic, Rodgers was already considering leaving Green Bay in 2021. According to the report, Rodgers’ adviser David Dunn put pressure on Packers president Mark Murphy and asked him during a phone call to either fire general manager Brian Gutekunst or trade the then-MVP.
Gutekunst put a stop to Rodgers trade
“The Athletic” confronted Rodgers after the situation – but the quarterback merely referred to his agent, who also declined to comment.
The Packers effectively denied their playmaker’s request. Gutekunst told reporters after the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft that the Packers “will not trade” Rodgers.
Rodgers extended once again in Green Bay
The Packers went into the regular season with Rodgers, finishing with a record of 13-4 and reaching the playoffs as the top-seeded team in the NFC. They were then eliminated in the Divisional Round by the San Francisco 49ers. Rodgers, however, was again voted MVP.
The following offseason, Rodgers signed a new contract despite the inconsistencies with the front office. But Green Bay missed the playoffs – in part because Rodgers played one of the weakest seasons of his career.
Rodgers’ wish granted – Gutekunst continues as Packers GM
This April, Rodgers’ wish was granted after all and Green Bay’s “number 12” moved to the “Big Apple”. So the 39-year-old will be playing for another team for the first time.
Gutekunst is still with the Packers and is now entering his sixth season as general manager of the franchise.
