Washington Commanders: Will Eric Bieniemy fail? Ex-stars with different opinions

Offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy’s move from the Chiefs to the Commanders made waves. Former running back LeSean McCoy believes Bieniemy will fail. But there are headwinds.

There has been speculation about Eric Bieniemy as a future head coach for years. Not if, but when was the only question asked.

After two Super Bowl wins with the Kansas City Chiefs, Bieniemy recently joined the Washington Commanders – not as head coach, but also as offensive coordinator.

While it’s the same job title, it’s with different roles. In Washington, the offense will be all Bieniemy’s; in Kansas City, Andy Reid has always been in charge of playcalling. Still, there are doubts about the 53-year-old’s tenure. Among others, former player LeSean McCoy.

McCoy sure: “Bieniemy will fail!”

On the talk show “Speak,” the former Chiefs running back questioned his qualities under Bieniemy. “What are his qualities as a coordinator? I’ve been there, others haven’t. He has nothing to do with the passing game,” McCoy tells me. “That’s all Andy Reid does. “

“He’s also not the one correcting mistakes or talking in general,” the two-time Super Bowl champ continued. “Now you go from the Chiefs, where you could hide behind Patrick Mahomes, to the Commanders, where you’re supposed to call plays? That can’t go well. “

McCoy and Bieniemy worked together in 2019, winning the Super Bowl together against the San Francisco 49ers.

Charles counters: “He deserves to be head coach “

There was a headwind from another running back. Jamaal Charles was with the Kansas City Chiefs before the Patrick Mahomes era and he has nothing but praise for the 53-year-old.

“I have to disagree with you Shady. Bieniemy coached me for four years, I learned so many things from ‘EB’ and I still keep in touch with him,” the running back, who retired in 2018, explained. “He deserves to be a head coach.”

Former wide receiver Tyreek Hill also weighed in on the discussion. “I think Shady is just mad because Bieniemy told him to hold onto the ball properly.” McCoy was known throughout his career for holding balls loosely and with only one hand.
