Green Bay Packers: Aaron Jones stays and gives up money in return

The Green Bay Packers have reached an agreement on their first top personnel matter: Running back Aaron Jones will forgo money and continue to play for the Packers in 2023

Aaron Jones will remain with the Green Bay Packers – and even waive money for it.

As his agents confirmed to “ESPN”, the running back’s employment contract has been restructured. On the one hand, to prevent a release, because Jones would have been on the books with around 20 million dollars in 2023.

This will allow the Packers to free up some cap space. According to “Spotrac” by the new deal after all almost twelve million dollars.

Aaron Jones: With the Green Bay Packers since 2017

Jones will forgo five million dollars as part of the restructuring and “only” get eleven million dollars, converting a squad bonus into an 8.52 million dollar signing bonus in the process. The 28-year-old’s contract runs for two more years, and he is set to get $12 million in 2024. He was selected by the Packers in the fifth round of the draft in 2017.

A so-called “void year” is also said to be part of the deal, according to “Spotrac”. A balance sheet trick to be able to be a little more financially powerful for 2023.

Cap Space: Still in the red

Despite the deal, the Packers are still a long way from that, as the franchise is currently almost six million dollars in the red. This means that further restructuring or even layoffs or separations are likely to follow. As is well known, a decision on quarterback superstar Aaron Rodgers is still pending.

The money for Jones is still a good investment from a sporting point of view. Last season, the running back ran for 1,121 yards and two touchdowns despite a rather weak Packers offence and also caught balls for 395 yards on five other scores.
