“Roughing the Passer”: NFL apparently rejects rule change

On the fifth day of play, there was an accumulation of controversial referee decisions in the NFL with regard to the “roughing the passer” penalty. There are no plans to change the interpretation, according to a report from “ESPN”.

Munich – “The NFL sucks, change the rules!!!,” Dallas Cowboys edge rusher Micah Parsons raged on Twitter. The reason for the outburst was another questionable referee decision against Chris Jones, defensive tackle of the Kansas City Chiefs.

He had just brought down Derek Carr with a sack and forced a fumble, but the referees ruled “roughing the passer”. Instead of Chiefs possession, the Raiders gained 15 yards and a new first down.

A day earlier, a similar situation caused a lot of fuss when Falcons player Grady Jarrett brought quarterback Tom Brady to the ground and was also penalised for what was thought to be a sack in accordance with the rules.

NFL won’t change rules

According to an “ESPN” report, the NFL, however, remains true to its line and does not want to adjust the rules. Currently, the rule offers a lot of room for interpretation for the referees, which can lead to wrong decisions.

Pass rusher Jones of the Chiefs demanded in the interview after the game that “roughing the passer” can be reviewed by video evidence. Either by the Chiefs referee or the video referee from New York City. “You have to have at least a little common sense in making those decisions,” said fellow quarterback Patrick Mahomes, for example.

“The rules are for the safety of the players and just the quarterbacks. That’s why we’re not going to deviate from it,” an anonymous NFL source is quoted as saying by “ESPN.”
