Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert is still not fully fit after injuring his ribs in the game against the Kansas City Chiefs. A day-to-day decision will be made on whether he will play in the next game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Munich/Los Angeles – Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert is still not fully fit after suffering a rib injury in last week’s game against the Kansas City Chiefs (24-27). It remains uncertain whether he will be on the field against the Jacksonville Jaguars at home to SoFi Stadium on Sunday.

An appearance in the Chargers’ upcoming home game against the Jags could depend on Herbert’s form, as Lindsey Thiry of ESPN reports.

According to head coach Brandon Staley, Herbert was resting during the week after injuring his ribs against the Chiefs. The quarterback participated in the franchise’s practice on a limited basis.

Los Angeles Chargers: Herbert light on workload in practice

The 23-year-old was only allowed to participate in individual ball handoffs with running backs standing and warm-ups with fellow quarterbacks Chase Daniel and Easton Stick.

Whether Herbert returns to the field Sunday against the Jaguars is a decision he will have to make himself first, his head coach said. “It starts with him. If he feels good we’ll wait and see what the doctors say and then we’ll make a decision,” Staley explained.

However, the head coach does not want to rush the return of his nominal starting quarterback: “For me as a coach, the health of my players is the most important thing. But we all have the same goal with Justin as well as with his family and his agent and hope that we somehow get him there so that he can play on Sunday.”

It’s a statement that smacks of a certain kind in light of the lawsuit filed by ex-Chargers quarterback Tyrod Taylor.

Currently under contract with the New York Giants as Daniel Jones’ backup, Taylor had most recently sued the Chargers’ team doctors for at least five million dollars in damages. In 2020, they had accidentally punctured Taylor’s lung before a game after he suffered a rib injury similar to Herbert’s – the 33-year-old had to sit out for a long time as a result and lost his starting job to the then-rookie.

Now Herbert is in his third NFL year as a starter for the Chargers. He may miss California for the first time since replacing Taylor.
