Arizona Cardinals remove controversial clause from new Murray contract

After the criticism about the controversial “homework” clause in Kyler Murray’s new contract became louder and louder, the Arizona Cardinals have reacted and deleted the corresponding contract addendum.

Munich – In the end, the criticism was too loud. The Arizona Cardinals have deleted the “homework” clause in quarterback Kyler Murray’s new contract. The franchise has confirmed this in the meantime.

The Cardinals told “ESPN”: “After seeing the distraction he caused, we removed the addendum from the contract. He was clearly perceived in a way that was never intended. Our confidence in Kyler Murray is at an all-time high and nothing demonstrates our belief in his ability to lead this team more than the commitment reflected in this contract.”

The clause had stipulated that Murray would have had to watch at least four hours of video footage a week before each game. In addition, he would not have been allowed to watch television or play video games during that time. This contract addendum sparked much discussion on social media.

Kyler Murray defends himself against the allegations

Just hours before the Cardinals’ statement, Murray himself had held a press conference and defended himself against the criticism. In it, he listed his past accomplishments – two Pro Bowl appearances, winning the Heisman Trophy and being selected No. 1 overall in the 2019 NFL Draft, among others.

Head coach Kliff Kingsbury, meanwhile, said he was not involved in the negotiations surrounding his quarterback’s new contract. “Obviously my whole role in this was praying and asking. And it turned out really well for me,” the 42-year-old said.

Even though the clause has been removed, Kyler Murray’s understanding of opposing defences is likely to come under extra scrutiny next season. In addition, the Arizona Cardinals are part of the popular documentary “Hard Knocks” this year, which follows the team during preseason.

In three years in the NFL now, Murray has thrown for 11,480 yards and 70 touchdowns (34 interceptions) so far. In addition, the 24-year-old has 1,786 rushing yards and 20 rushing touchdowns. His new contract guarantees him 160 million US dollars and can rise to around 230.5 million US dollars with bonuses.
