The Seattle Seahawks have struggled with their weak defence this season. Safety Quandre Diggs speaks out after the loss to the Rams, Coach Pete Carroll also speaks out.
Munich – Things are not exactly looking rosy for the Seattle Seahawks at the moment. The team has already suffered three defeats this season, most recently in the Thursday Night Game of the fifth NFL game day against the Los Angeles Rams.
The team’s defence in particular did not cut a good figure in the games so far. Against the Rams alone, the Seahawks allowed 476 yards.
In five games, the opposing teams have already scored 2,254 yards. Seattle is currently on track to break the negative record set by the New Orleans Saints in 2012, when they allowed 7,042 yards in the regular season.
So what’s going wrong with head coach Pete Carroll’s team?
Seahawks with big defensive problems
Against the Rams, things actually looked good in the first half. Only three points allowed, plus an interception by Quandre Diggs in the end zone – but then everything changed. The team from L.A. scored three touchdowns in the second half, the corresponding drives went for 70, 80 and almost 100 yards.
“We have issues that we have to fix, and everybody knows that,” safety Diggs said after the game. “At the end of the day, you either do your job or you’re not ready for that kind of atmosphere. That’s just the way it is.”
The safety is particularly bothered by the fact that it’s always big plays and wide plays that make life difficult for the Seahawks.
As for what causes the opponents’ many big plays, though, Diggs can’t say. “I don’t know. I just know the problem has to be fixed. We’ve got the guys to fix it. We’ve just got to do what we’ve got to do and hopefully we’ll make the right plays when the opportunities come. “
Carroll doesn’t want to expose players
Darrell Henderson’s touchdown was particularly painful for Seattle in the game against the Rams. Before that, the Rams’ drive seemed all but stopped on a third-and-10 with ten yards to go, but then Matthew Stafford hooked a deep throw to DeSean Jackson, who followed it up with a 68-yard gain.
“We have to stop those plays. We can’t give away plays like that on third-and-10. That’s unacceptable,” Diggs continued.
Head coach Pete Carroll was also disappointed with his team’s performance, but didn’t want to blame anyone. “I’m not going after individual players for anything at the moment. This is not the time for that. “
