NFL: Derek Carr on Comeback Rumors — In Contact with Several Teams

Derek Carr discusses inquiries from several NFL franchises in an interview. For him, however, family comes first now. That’s exactly why he’s still working out, though.

Derek Carr has been retired from football for a little over a year now. And he’s enjoying this life, as the 35-year-old emphasized in an interview with the “NFL Network” show “Good Morning Football” on his way to the golf course.

Yet he could have been preparing to return as a quarterback for the new NFL season long ago, as Carr revealed. When asked about it, he said, “I never say never. It would take a special situation.”

Several teams had contacted him during the offseason. But he didn’t want to name names. He’ll just say this much: “I simply told them what I was interested in and what my plans were. They were good, solid football teams, even if some of them were in different situations.”

The really big names weren’t among them, though, because as Carr explained earlier, he would put his helmet back on for a Super Bowl contender. His focus, however, is on his family and especially his five children, the youngest of whom was born just this spring.

Carr on comeback rumors: Has to keep training for the kids

If he were to come back after all, it would be all about winning for him. “It would have to be a special team that’s lost someone or needs someone. But even then, it wouldn’t be a sure thing,” the second-round pick in the 2014 draft continued.

However, he also made it clear that he has to keep training—albeit out of necessity. “ “I have four boys who shouldn’t be able to beat me up when they’re 18—so I have to keep training,” Carr quipped.

He added: “I’ll be fit and ready—or probably not. I’ll probably just be training my kids; that’s for sure.” Maybe one of the four will follow in the California native’s footsteps someday. And after eleven years in Oakland, Las Vegas, and New Orleans, that’s no small feat.

Carr holds several franchise records with the Raiders. His 35,222 passing yards, 217 passing touchdowns, 3,201 completions, and 4,958 pass attempts remain unmatched. He was selected for the Pro Bowl four times. Persistent shoulder problems then forced him to end his career last spring, after two of his four contract years with the Saints.

But that may not have been his final word. Questions about a comeback will surely continue to follow Carr for some time.
