Brandon Aiyuk actually wanted to leave San Francisco to play in Washington alongside his former college teammate Jayden Daniels. But after a bizarre Instagram attack by the 49ers receiver against the quarterback, the Commanders deal is in danger of falling through before it’s even gotten off the ground.
What’s actually going on with Brandon Aiyuk?
People have been asking this question for quite some time. After all, despite his lucrative contract, the wide receiver has recently done just about everything to sabotage his relationship with the San Francisco 49ers.
But now the 28-year-old is also picking a fight with the team he apparently wants to join: the Washington Commanders. More specifically, with quarterback Jayden Daniels, who is likely to be a key factor in a potential trade.
Daniels and Aiyuk were teammates in college during the 2019 season with the Arizona State Sun Devils—the receiver was the freshman quarterback’s go-to target back then. Aiyuk racked up over 1,100 receiving yards, after which he was drafted by the 49ers in the first round.
Aiyuk unfollows Daniels on Instagram
According to reports, Daniels was reportedly not averse to playing on the same team as Aiyuk again. That, in turn, could prompt the Commanders to inquire about a trade with the 49ers.
Which is why it’s not particularly smart of Aiyuk to get into a feud with Daniels right now of all times. But first, the receiver unfollowed the quarterback on Instagram, then he directly attacked Daniels in his posts.
After being released by the Detroit Lions: Three teams have reportedly already contacted Terrion Arnold
In his Instagram Story, Aiyuk tagged the Commanders’ QB and addressed him directly: “You’re on my team now. You follow my rules. I’m a grown man, kid. You need to stop running to your mom first; maybe then I’ll believe what you’re saying.”
A viral video as the trigger for the beef?
It’s speculated that Aiyuk, who has already posed in Commanders gear, is reacting to a video that recently went viral. In it, a 49ers fan shouted “Fuck Brandon Aiyuk!” at Daniels. The quarterback simply responded with a smile—which Aiyuk apparently didn’t like at all.
A potential trade to the Commanders might now be less likely due to these rather unnecessary squabbles. First of all, though, everything depends on the 49ers anyway. In San Francisco, Aiyuk is on the “Reserve/Left Squad” list after skipping rehab following a serious knee injury last year.
In any case, the 49ers don’t seem willing to just let the eccentric receiver go.
