Travis Hunter: Jacksonville Jaguars apparently settling on position for their two-way player

According to Ian Rapoport, the Jacksonville Jaguars expect to be able to put normal pressure on Travis Hunter in training camp. However, the focus is apparently shifting to the turf for the two-way player.

Travis Hunter is apparently finding a new athletic home in his second NFL season. “They’re planning him as a full-time corner and part-time receiver,” NFL insider Ian Rapoport revealed about the Jacksonville Jaguars’ mind games. He also referred to information from his colleague Cameron Wolfe from the past few weeks.

As a result, Hunter will play more often on defense this year and will only be available less often as a spot starter for Trevor Lawrence. In his rookie season, he was a typical two-way player, playing 324 snaps on offense, 162 on defense and three on special teams before a torn ACL ended his season and the highly anticipated experiment after seven games.

Only in weeks two and three was Hunter on the field more often as a cornerback than a wide receiver. In his last two games before the injury, he even played 77.6 and 87 percent of the offensive snaps respectively. His output in his seven appearances: 28 receptions for 298 yards including a touchdown as a receiver, 15 tackles and three passes defended as a cornerback.

Hunter before comeback: “Can probably complete training camp in full”

Rapoport added that with the new direction, the Jaguars could now get the Hunter they were hoping for when they traded up to second in the 2025 draft and gave up their 2026 first-round pick to the Cleveland Browns in addition to their first-round pick at the time. That’s why the draft for the team from Florida doesn’t start until the 56th pick this time – deep in round two.

The Jags need a healthy Hunter all the more. And they can probably plan for him in time for pre-season. According to Rapoport, the 22-year-old has recovered “exceptionally well” from his injury. He will not be able to fully participate in the OTAs at the end of May and in the first half of June, but: “They assume that he will be able to complete the entire training camp.”

So then with a new focus. For Hunter, it will be about chasing receivers in the future instead of being one of those who run routes for the quarterback.
