In Liam Coen’s first year as head coach, Trevor Lawrence played a strong NFL season. Coen wants to see even more from his quarterback in 2026.
For Trevor Lawrence, the change of coach at the Jacksonville Jaguars was definitely worth it. In his first year together with Liam Coen, the first pick from the 2021 draft showed great improvement compared to previous years and helped the Jaguars make the playoffs.
This was followed by an immediate exit against the Buffalo Bills, which Lawrence sealed with an interception. Nevertheless, the general trend for the 26-year-old was positive. The quarterback even made it to the finalists for the MVP Award.
Coen now spoke about the development of his protégé and emphasized the difficult circumstances that Lawrence faced in the first years of his career with the Jaguars. “Four new game systems, different head coaches, offensive coordinators – you name it,” Coen said.
Injuries were also not an issue for Lawrence in the 2025 season. “If you look at the whole season, you realize: He didn’t miss a single practice, he didn’t miss a single throw in practice, and he played the whole season,” Coen summed up.
Coen sees “a lot of room for improvement” with Lawrence
And yet the end of the line has not yet been reached, on the contrary: Coen is raising expectations. “There is still so much room for improvement,” he made clear.
His 29 passing touchdowns were a personal record for the quarterback, but not an outstanding figure either. The first half of the season in particular was up and down before he really turned up the heat in the final six weeks of the regular season. In five of his last six games, he posted a passer rating above 100 points.
Coen wants to build on this good impression from the final phase of the season. “I think that’s what we’re looking forward to on offense, but if you approach it with A) humility and B) mental and physical toughness, I think you can accomplish a lot with a quarterback,” he said.
The two spent a lot of time together in San Francisco during the Super Bowl, he said. “And I got to see a different side of him, see him from a different perspective, and I’m really looking forward to working with Trevor again this year,” Coen said.
