The Kansas City Chiefs have officially expressed their interest in playing in Europe again in the 2026 season. One location in particular has caught the team’s eye.
The Kansas City Chiefs are pushing for a game in Spain. Team president Mark Donovan has confirmed to the Kansas City Star that the Chiefs are aggressively lobbying the NFL for a clash against the Atlanta Falcons in Madrid.
The NFL announced in early March that the Falcons will play their home game in Madrid in the 2026 season as part of the International Series – specifically at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu, the home of Real Madrid.
The opponent had not yet been determined. Now the Chiefs are coming forward publicly: “We’ve been very open and aggressive with the league from the beginning that we want to play in Spain this year,” Donovan said. “We think it’s a great market, a strong game and a good matchup.”
Kansas City Chiefs back in Europe for the first time since 2023?
The Chiefs, along with the Chicago Bears and Miami Dolphins, are among the three teams granted marketing rights in Spain by the NFL. In addition, the Bears are also on the Falcons’ list of 2026 home opponents.
For Kansas City, the Madrid game would be the first game in Europe since the Frankfurt game against the Miami Dolphins in 2023.
The NFL continues to expand its international program. After games in London, Munich, Sao Paulo and Mexico City, Spain is set to become a regular part of the schedule following its debut in 2025. Official confirmation of the opponent for the Falcons home game in Madrid is still pending.
