NFL: Will Maxx Crosby make the Baltimore Ravens Super Bowl favorites? The trade examined from three perspectives

The NFL has gained another spectacular trade: Maxx Crosby is moving from the Las Vegas Raiders to the Baltimore Ravens. What does the deal mean for Crosby himself and for the two teams involved? An analysis from three perspectives.

For the second year in a row, one of the NFL’s best pass rushers is changing teams.

Following last year’s trade of former Cowboy Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers, it is now Maxx Crosby who could reshuffle the balance of power in the league. After seven years with the Oakland and Las Vegas Raiders, Crosby will now play for the Baltimore Ravens, who are giving up their first-round picks in 2026 and 2027 in return.

It’s a deal that says a lot about the Raiders’ strategy. And at the same time, it significantly changes the starting position in the AFC. The Ravens are sending nothing less than a challenge to their competitors. Crosby himself gets the opportunity to play for a contender in the last years of his prime.

Maxx Crosby: The Las Vegas Raiders’ perspective

Crosby was the standout player in an otherwise uncompetitive Raiders defense. The 28-year-old, a fourth-round pick in the 2019 draft by the franchise then based in Oakland, was a figurehead and had repeatedly stated last year that he had no interest in leaving the team. However, that attitude changed recently.

When the Raiders stopped playing him at the end of the season because their only goal was to secure the No. 1 pick, Crosby was pretty upset about the decision. “Honestly, I don’t give a damn about the No. 1 pick,” he made clear. The relationship was over. In recent weeks, trade rumors surrounding the two-time All-Pro and five-time Pro Bowler intensified. Now the Raiders had an offer on the table they couldn’t refuse. An additional first-round pick for both 2026 and 2027 gives Las Vegas all the options it needs for its rebuild.

In addition, the Raiders are expanding their already huge cap space by another $30.7 million. This gives the franchise more than $120 million to spend ahead of the upcoming free agency. However, this also increases the risk of overpaying mediocre players to lure them to Vegas.

With this trade, the Raiders are clearly looking to the future, not the present. In tight end Brock Bowers and running back Ashton Jeanty, they have two young and potentially high-caliber playmakers on offense, and quarterback Fernando Mendoza is likely to join them in the draft.

With new head coach Klint Kubiak, who also belongs to the offensive side of the ball, and Tom Brady as the leading figure in the background, the Raiders’ direction is clear. Offensive spectacle is set to define the franchise, and it seems that the team is willing to sacrifice the defense to a certain extent to achieve this. At least at the top.

There is enough capital and ammunition available to improve the defense in free agency and the draft. However, the quality of a Maxx Crosby will probably be difficult to replace. And yet it makes sense to trade a player who plays at Super Bowl level when the team itself is still a long way from that.

Maxx Crosby: The Baltimore Ravens’ perspective

The Ravens are entering a new era in 2026, especially with regard to the coaching staff. Longtime successful coach John Harbaugh was fired after last season’s disappointment, and Jesse Minter is bringing a breath of fresh air to the team. Above all, Minter was and is one of the most exciting defensive coaches in the NFL. At the Los Angeles Chargers, the 42-year-old made a name for himself as an innovative defensive playcaller who makes his players better. In this respect, his signing alone was expected to improve the defense. With Crosby, they now have an anchor player they didn’t have before.

Above all, the Ravens’ pass rush was toothless. Their pressure rate of 28.28 percent ranked 23rd in the league, and only 4.31 percent of opposing dropbacks ended in a sack. Only the injury-plagued San Francisco 49ers were worse in this category. So it was clear where the problem lay.

To solve the problem, Baltimore opted for the big solution. Not a free agency signing of Trey Hendrickson, but an all-in trade. Crosby will turn 29 shortly before the start of the season, so he should still have two or three really good years left in the tank, maybe even more. The Ravens see their Super Bowl window and want to attack it as aggressively as possible. It’s an understandable strategy, because quarterback Lamar Jackson also recently turned 29. Although quarterbacks can usually play for much longer, for players like Jackson, who rely primarily on their mobility, the window is not open forever. The Ravens know that.

The plan: An offense with a fit Jackson should always be competitive, and the defense must not let it down. Ideally, both parts of the team should be among the best in the league, but that is difficult to achieve. With the trade for Crosby, the Ravens are showing that they want to at least come close to this goal. With him and Minter, the defense should make a huge leap forward.

Baltimore was already among the top favorites before the start of the preseason, and this status is now even more valid. In the AFC North, quarterback Joe Burrow of the Cincinnati Bengals in particular is likely to view the Crosby trade with horror, but the rest of the conference now also has a real powerhouse as competition.

But the plan also carries risks. Without first-round picks this year and next, the Ravens’ room for maneuver in the draft is limited – and there is definitely a need for reinforcements at the receiver position, for example. And it remains to be seen whether Crosby’s contract will still allow the team to keep center Tyler Linderbaum. So one problem area has been resolved, but new ones could arise.

Maxx Crosby: The player’s perspective

For Crosby himself, this is an opportunity to cap off what has been a strong individual career so far. He has always been considered one of the top players at his position, but with the Raiders, he would not have had a chance to make it to the Super Bowl in the foreseeable future. With the Ravens, the conditions are much better.

Especially since the 28-year-old may be able to take another step forward himself. After all, Minter’s coaching is likely to be better than much of what Crosby has experienced with the Raiders in recent years. He can broaden his athletic horizons and doesn’t go into the season knowing that nothing will work out anyway.

At the same time, Crosby will not become a franchise legend with the Raiders after all. However, his departure may help Las Vegas rise to become a title contender in the coming years. The Raiders fans would thank him for it.
