NFL: Arizona Cardinals release quarterback Kyler Murray and accept huge dead cap

The Arizona Cardinals are moving forward without quarterback Kyler Murray. The playmaker has been released and has already said his goodbyes.

Kyler Murray’s time with the Arizona Cardinals is coming to an end. According to ESPN, the 28-year-old will be officially released on the first day of the new NFL year on March 11. Murray himself has already said goodbye to his team and fans on social media. “To everyone who supported me and showed kindness to my family and me during my time in Arizona: I thank you from the bottom of my heart,” he wrote.

“I wanted nothing more than to be the one to end this organization’s 77-year drought, and I’m sorry I let us down. I wish this community and my brothers nothing but the best,” Murray continued. He said he is “firmly convinced that my best performances are still ahead of me, and I look forward to proving that,” he explained.

Murray was drafted by the Cardinals as the first overall pick in 2019. In his debut season, he was named Offensive Rookie of the Year. Ultimately, however, he was never able to fully live up to expectations. Only in the 2021 season did Arizona make it to the playoffs with Murray, where they were immediately eliminated.

NFL: Kyler Murray repeatedly plagued by injuries

In recent years, Murray has also struggled with injuries. He missed part of the 2022 season and the start of the 2023 season due to a torn cruciate ligament, and last year he was only able to play five games due to a foot injury.

After the dismissal of head coach Jonathan Gannon, discussions about Murray’s future gained momentum, and now the decision has been made. With the dismissal, the Cardinals are swallowing nearly $55 million in dead cap, but are saving $19.5 million of the 2027 salary that would have been guaranteed on March 15 of this year.

It is still unclear who will lead the franchise on the field next season. In the past season, Jacoby Brissett stepped into the breach as Murray’s replacement and played solidly. Murray himself is now likely to be a sought-after player in free agency for all teams looking for a quarterback. He should at least be valuable as a solid temporary solution.
