NFL: New England Patriots have new defensive coordinator

The New England Patriots have a new defensive coordinator. Zak Kuhr is stepping up from linebacker coach and play caller to head of defense.

According to ESPN, the New England Patriots have promoted Zak Kuhr from his interim position to full-time defensive coordinator. Hired as inside linebackers coach in 2025, Kuhr took over the role in week two of the season after Terrell Williams was diagnosed with prostate cancer. Williams, who has now recovered and been cleared by doctors, is moving to a higher position on the coaching staff, paving the way for Kuhr’s promotion.

New England Patriots a top defense under Kuhr

Under Kuhr’s leadership, the Patriots’ defense put in an impressive performance during the 2025 regular season. The unit allowed just 18.8 points per game – the fourth-best in the entire NFL – and held opposing offenses to an average of around 295 yards per game.

The pass defense was particularly strong: the Patriots gave up only 3,512 passing yards, which was among the top 10 in the league. They also impressed in run defense, allowing only 1,729 rushing yards over the entire season.

The defense also recorded 35 sacks and forced 10 interceptions, which contributed significantly to the Pats’ strong 14-3 record. In the playoffs, the defense improved even further and played a decisive role in the team’s advance to Super Bowl LX.

Vrabel praises Kuhr: “Did a fantastic job”

Head coach Mike Vrabel praised Kuhr explicitly: “Zak has done a fantastic job. When they are given more responsibility, they use it and turn it into something special.”

Williams also commented positively: “Zak deserves a lot of credit for taking over this defense. I’m really proud of the guys and happy to see them continue to thrive.”

Cornerback Christian Gonzalez added: “He positioned us well in every down situation, and it was cool to see him take on that role.”

The promotion took place in Foxborough and is an important building block in the Patriots’ postseason planning, who are focusing on continuity after their strong year.
