NFL: All-Pro center Frank Ragnow comes out of retirement – reinforcement for Detroit Lions in playoff battle

After the Detroit Lions recently had problems in the O-line, a star from previous years is coming out of retirement.

Frank Ragnow’s retirement lasted less than a year. As Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network reports, the All-Pro center is ending his retirement and returning to the Detroit Lions, who are currently battling for a spot in the NFC playoffs. Ragnow had originally announced his retirement in June.

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, a source said Ragnow decided to come out of retirement because he “loves” the game.

The Lions selected Ragnow with the 20th pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, and he quickly developed into one of the best centers in the league. In just seven seasons, he was named to the Pro Bowl four times and selected to the Second-Team All-Pro three times.

NFL: Injuries had forced Ragnow into retirement

Despite his successes, he also struggled with injuries during this time. In 2021, he tore the plantar plate in his left foot after just four games, ending his season.

In the 2023 season, he was also plagued by injuries to his toe, knee, and ankle.

Ragnow’s return comes at just the right time for the Lions, who are looking to finish the season strong and make the playoffs again. It is still unclear whether he will be ready to play on Thursday against the Green Bay Packers or whether he will only be able to return in Week 14 against the Dallas Cowboys.
