After Ja’Marr Chase denied spitting on his opponent Jalen Ramsey after the game, the NFL reviewed video footage and found him guilty.
The NFL suspended Cincinnati Bengals receiver Ja’Marr Chase for one game on Monday for spitting on defensive back Jalen Ramsey during Sunday’s game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. The league announced this in a statement.
Chase will miss the Bengals’ Week 12 game against the New England Patriots, who are currently atop the AFC East with a 9-2 record.
The league’s statement said: “In the fourth quarter, Chase spat on Pittsburgh cornerback Jalen Ramsey, violating Rule 12, Section 3, Article 1, which prohibits any conduct that is contrary to the generally accepted principles of sportsmanship.”
NFL: Chase loses more than half a million euros
According to NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport, Chase is appealing the suspension. If the suspension stands, Chase would have to forfeit $507,000.
Ramsey and Chase clashed at the start of the fourth quarter. The altercation quickly became physical, with Ramsey hitting Chase’s helmet and grabbing his facemask before teammates from both teams intervened. The Steelers defender was subsequently ejected from the field. Ramsey said after the game that Chase had spat at him, triggering the situation. Chase initially denied this, but video footage appears to show that he did indeed spit in Ramsey’s direction. On Monday, according to several local reporters, Chase declined to speak to the media.
Already the second spitting incident this season
“He spit on me,” Ramsey said on Sunday, according to ESPN. “At a moment like that, I honestly don’t care about football. With all due respect. I have nothing against trash talk, on the contrary. I actually like that side of the game. I think most people know that.” Chase’s one-game suspension follows the league’s action in a similar incident earlier this season. At that time, Philadelphia defensive tackle Jalen Carter spat on Dallas quarterback Dak Prescott before the first offensive play of the kickoff game. Carter was ejected from the field before his first play. The NFL did not impose an additional suspension because the Eagles star missed the entire game against the Cowboys.
