NFL: Aaron Rodgers takes responsibility for Pittsburgh Steelers’ defeat against Los Angeles Chargers

16 of 31 passes completed for 161 yards, plus one touchdown and two interceptions. Not a good stat line for Aaron Rodgers. After the game against the Chargers, he takes responsibility for himself.

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers and head coach Mike Tomlin have admitted that the four-time NFL MVP did not perform at the level required in the 10-25 defeat to the Los Angeles Chargers.

“That wasn’t my best performance,” Rodgers told reporters after the game. “I have to play better than that for us to win. Whatever it takes. Whether it’s better checks, better throws, whatever it is, I have to play better.”

And he announced: “I will. We definitely have to play better on offense. But that’s part of the season. There are ups and downs, highs and lows, and we can’t get carried away by the wave.”

The 41-year-old completed 16 of 31 passes for 161 yards, throwing one touchdown and two interceptions. He was also sacked three times, one of which led to a safety.

Steelers coach Tomlin: “We were bad tonight.”

With a 5-4 record, the Steelers continue to lead the AFC North. Head coach Mike Tomlin is not drawing any far-reaching conclusions from Sunday’s performance.

“I’m not lacking confidence,” he said. “I don’t need a pat on the back. We were bad tonight. We’ll come back.”

Sunday night highlighted the risk of making Aaron Rodgers the Plan A solution at quarterback this offseason.

The 10-time Pro Bowler was frustratingly inaccurate at times.

“A lot of things didn’t work,” he said. “We were bad on third downs. I was just a little off. I missed DK [Metcalf] early. That could have been a big play. I definitely missed some throws.”

Not a good outlook for Pittsburgh

“And then we didn’t get the guys open, and when they were open, I missed throws that I usually make.”

The Steelers can draw some confidence from their position in the standings and the overall state of their division. But this team has an aging quarterback and a defense that allows the fifth-most yards per game (376).

Something has to change if Pittsburgh is to avoid a fifth consecutive playoff loss in the wild-card round — assuming the team even makes the postseason.
