Despite immense injury problems, the San Francisco 49ers won the opener of the sixth matchday at the Los Angeles Rams. Backup quarterback Mac Jones was outstanding.
The San Francisco 49ers won the California derby in the NFL. The five-time Super Bowl champions beat the Los Angeles Rams 26-23 in overtime, handing their NFC West rivals their first home defeat.
Despite the absence of quarterback Brock Purdy (toe injury), the 49ers are on course for the playoffs as NFC West leaders with a 4-1 record, while the Rams now stand at three wins and two losses.
Mac Jones and Kendrick Bourne deliver
In overtime, San Francisco’s defense first took the opposing offense off the field with one yard to go, before kicker Eddy Pineiro sealed the victory with his fourth field goal of the game from 41 yards.
Backup quarterback Mac Jones went without an interception and completed 33 passes for 342 yards, two of which led to touchdowns. In the absence of numerous starting receivers, Kendrick Bourne also impressed with ten catches for 142 yards.
NFL: Record set by Rams star Puka Nacua
For the first time under head coach Sean McVay, the Rams fumbled twice just short of the end zone. As a result, Matthew Stafford’s three touchdown passes were not enough to secure their first win of the season within their own division.
Despite the defeat, Puka Nacua set a new NFL record. The 24-year-old caught ten passes, bringing his total to 52 receptions. No one has ever caught so many passes in the first five games of a season.
