The Cleveland Browns are apparently drawing conclusions from their disastrous offensive performances: the team is changing quarterbacks – a rookie will get his chance to prove himself.
A disappointing 1-3 start is apparently prompting changes at the Cleveland Browns. And that change is happening at the most important position: as CBS reports, veteran Joe Flacco is being benched.
Rookie Dillon Gabriel is apparently set to make his NFL debut in his place.
And he’ll be doing so in London, as the Browns face the Minnesota Vikings in the English capital on Sunday. According to the report, Gabriel is the first quarterback to make his debut outside the US.
The Browns most recently suffered a 10-34 defeat to the Detroit Lions in Week 4. The loss to the Lions was less of a problem than an offense that has been completely off its game this season.
Cleveland Browns: Disastrous offensive statistics
In four games so far, they have never scored more than 17 points. Flacco also ranks last among quarterbacks in passer rating (60.3), completion rate (58.1 percent), and yards per attempt (5.1). In addition, the 40-year-old has already thrown six interceptions, with only one quarterback in the league having thrown more. And only the winless Tennessee Titans have scored fewer points than the Browns this season. Disastrous numbers. The consequences are clear. Head coach Kevin Stefanski has apparently seen enough and is now trying rookie Gabriel, whom the Browns selected in the third round of the draft before the season and who is officially Flacco’s backup.
Gabriel had prevailed in the rookie duel with Shedeur Sanders, who had previously served as the emergency quarterback, in a crowded quarterback room during preseason—Kenny Pickett and Tyler Huntley have already been traded, and Deshaun Watson is working on his comeback.
But here’s what you need to know: The Browns have not yet communicated a possible change. Flacco is still listed first in the unofficial depth chart for Sunday’s game.
