The second day of NFL preseason games is over. Based on what we’ve learned so far, we can make a few (bold) predictions for the regular season.
The NFL season is just around the corner, and two days of preseason games have been played.
This gives us a taste of what’s to come – and plenty of material for a few hot takes.
Based on what we’ve seen so far, we’ve come up with five bold predictions for the second day of the preseason that we think could come true in the regular season.
Of course, it’s important to keep in mind that these are only impressions from preseason games.
Hot Take 1: Jaxson Dart will be the starter this season
As he did on the first day of play, Jaxson Dart also impressed against the New York Jets. The rookie quarterback appears calm and composed, throwing one touchdown pass and running in another. He completed 14 of 16 passes. Thirteen completions in a row. 137 yards speak for themselves.
Dart looks ready and is under no time pressure behind Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston. Of course, Dart’s future also depends on the performances of the other two. But if he can maintain this level of play, there’s no reason to wait too long to give him his regular season debut.
He gets the ball out quickly, makes the right decisions and commands the offense with more experience than his age would suggest. The actual plan is probably to let him learn for a year before he is considered as a starter. But he seems further along than expected and could advance sooner.
Hot Take 2: Dillon Gabriel to the New Orleans Saints
Dillon Gabriel didn’t look bad against the Buffalo Bills, but he was worse than Shedeur Sanders. One of them won’t make the roster cut, partly for financial reasons.
But Gabriel, like Sanders, is showing his potential. Unlike rookie Tyler Shough with the New Orleans Saints, who are left without a quarterback after Derek Carr’s sudden retirement.
Head coach Kellen Moore has so far refrained from naming a clear starter, although it should really be Shough, who was drafted specifically for the position. The Saints are presumably keeping one eye on Cleveland in the hope that the QB who drops out could be an upgrade. We’re betting on Gabriel.
Hot Take 3: Nick Chubb will be Comeback Player of the Year
After serious injuries and a period of suffering lasting almost two years, Nick Chubb is back on the field. Before this misfortune, he was one of the best running backs in the league with the Cleveland Browns. He is expected to compete with starter Joe Mixon at the Houston Texans.
Mixon is prone to injury himself. Chubb delivered 25 yards on five carries and looked as dynamic as ever. If he can find his way back to his old form, he could form a great duo with Mixon, if not more.
Hot Take 4: The Indianapolis Colts get the first draft pick
The quarterback duel between newcomer Daniel Jones and long-term injury victim Anthony Richardson is the talk of the Colts. But there is much more to it than that. Regardless of this decision, the team is not good enough.
In both cases, head coach Shane Steichen’s team is facing a difficult season. All other teams in the lower region are showing a largely positive trend. To put it positively, the Colts are stagnating.
If there is no improvement, the worst-case scenario could unfold: the weakest season of all the teams competing. However, this would result in the first draft pick and a more radical rebuild. Something the franchise may need more than the answer to the current QB duel.
Hot Take 5: Caleb Williams will be a top-5 quarterback in the league
There are still a few issues between QB Caleb Williams and creative head coach Ben Johnson, who apparently has the thickest playbook in the NFL, if the voices on the ground are to be believed. In the dominant 38-0 win over the Buffalo Bills, we saw a lot of what Johnson wants.
When Williams and his coach are on the same page, this offense is dangerous. Cole Kmet and Colston Loveland are a very strong TE duo. DJ Moore is one of the most talented receivers around. Williams has all the ingredients to break out and give Lamar Jackson, Josh Allen, Patrick Mahomes, Jalen Hurts, and Joe Burrow a run for their money.
If you want to think big and get excited about the Bears, Williams could escalate to the top and become one of the top five quarterbacks in the league.
