Deshaun Watson has been given a new role. The injured Cleveland Browns quarterback will be spending more time working with Shedeur Sanders and his teammates.
The Cleveland Browns have assigned Deshaun Watson a new role. The injured top earner is to make himself useful off the field.
The 29-year-old will look after the rest of the franchise’s quarterbacks and act as a mentor. With an Achilles tendon injury, Watson will miss most, if not all, of the NFL season.
As a result, the Browns want him to focus more on his teammates and support them in their tasks. In addition to Watson, Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, Dillon Gabriel, and Shedeur Sanders are also employed as QBs.
According to cleveland.com, Watson specifically chose Sanders to take under his wing.
Cleveland Browns: Watson a kind of cheerleader
“Watson presents himself as an excellent teammate. He gets involved in the quarterback room and is an integral part of the meetings. He’s almost a kind of cheerleader for the other four quarterbacks who are fighting for the starting job,” said a source close to the Browns about the impression on the ground.
The report goes on to mention that Watson is taking more time for the rookies. Gabriel, like Sanders, is apparently putting in overtime in training to continue to present himself in the best possible light.
After a few joint sessions and instructions, Sanders is also said to be improving thanks to Watson’s mentoring. “This is helping Sanders’ learning curve to rise. It’s paying off,” according to reports from Browns insiders.
Father and NFL legend Deion Sanders already publicly supported Watson in 2024 when he suffered his serious injury, long before his son signed with the franchise. Referring to this, Watson said, “I’m happy to be able to repay that gesture now.”
