NFL: Aaron Rodgers announces imminent retirement after signing with Pittsburgh Steelers

Aaron Rodgers will enter the 2025 NFL season as a Pittsburgh Steelers player. He has now announced that this will most likely be his last season in the league.

Aaron Rodgers has been part of the NFL since 2005. After three years as Brett Favre’s backup at the Green Bay Packers, he began his own Hall of Fame career in 2008, leading the Packers to a Super Bowl victory and being named MVP four times.

After an inglorious interlude with the New York Jets, he recently signed a contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers – likely the last of his career. Rodgers wants to end his career very soon.

As the 41-year-old announced on the “Pat McAfee Show,” he is “pretty sure” that the 2025 season will be his last in the NFL. That’s why he deliberately signed only a one-year contract in Pittsburgh.

“It’s about ending things with a lot of love, fun, and peace. I’ve played in the NFL for 20 years, which is a long time. And I couldn’t imagine a better place to end it than with one of the cornerstone franchises of the NFL,” he said.

Rodgers waited a long time to make his decision

Rodgers took his time before making a decision a few weeks ago and continuing his career after all. Retirement was already on the cards after he was released by the Jets.

The Steelers put all their eggs in the Rodgers basket and did not sign a quarterback with starter potential in free agency or the draft. Mason Rudolph and Skylar Thompson are two classic backups, while rookie Will Howard still needs time.

The Steelers are once again considered playoff contenders for the 2025 season. Last season, Pittsburgh lost to the Baltimore Ravens in the Wild Card Round with starter Russell Wilson.
