NFL – Indianapolis Colts: Death of owner Jim Irsay – Succession likely settled

Following the death of Colts owner Jim Irsay, a successor is needed. The new owner has apparently already been decided.

On Wednesday night, the Indianapolis Colts announced the sad news that franchise owner Jim Irsay had passed away. He was 65 years old and “passed away peacefully in his sleep.”

The owner’s death means that the team will have a new principal owner. According to consistent US media reports, Carlie Irsay-Gordon will take over the management of the team. The 44-year-old is the eldest of Irsay’s three daughters.

All three are already listed as owners of the team and are expected to remain so. In addition to Irsay-Gordon, there are 42-year-old Casey Foyt and 37-year-old Kalen Jackson.

According to NFL rules, every NFL owner must annually designate the person who will take control of the team in the event of the death or incapacity of the principal owner. And not without reason.

Daughter Irsay-Gordon already had control

The league had cracked down after Titans founder Bud Adams died without transferring control of the team to any of the three branches of his family.

If the relevant issues are not settled for a team, a fine of up to ten million US dollars is possible.

The late Jim Irsay took over the franchise from his father Robert in 1995 after he suffered a stroke.

In 2014, daughter Carlie Irsay-Gordon took control of the team on a temporary basis when her father was suspended for six games after being arrested for drunk driving.
