Ex-NFL star Chris Kluwe explains “MAGA” Nazi comparison – and would go to prison again

Recently, former NFL punter Chris Kluwe verbally attacked US President Donald Trump and called his “MAGA” slogan a Nazi movement. He was briefly imprisoned for this. Now he has explained himself and made it clear that he would go to prison again.

Last week, long-time NFL player Chris Kluwe made headlines.

The former Minnesota Vikings punter gave a speech at a city council meeting in Huntington Beach, California, in which he called US President Donald Trump’s “MAGA” slogan a “Nazi movement,” among other things.

As a result, he was taken to the ground by police officers, handcuffed and detained for around four hours before being released. Now he has revealed his motives to USA Today – and made it clear that he is not afraid of another stay in prison.

“I’m willing to go back to jail. But I think it’s so serious. And I’m not willing to ask someone to do something I don’t want to do myself,“ the 43-year-old explained.

”It’s important that those who, like me, have privilege and power, are at the forefront supporting those who are being oppressed. Because we can’t expect the people who are being oppressed to do all the work. It’s on all of our shoulders to do it. And I hope other people are brave enough and willing to do it,” Kluwe continued.

Meanwhile, he also expressed frustration that more powerful people, such as the owners of the NFL teams, are not speaking out against abuses: “I think the more important question to ask is why the owners of the NFL teams are not speaking out. Why are the people who really have power, the people who sign the checks, why aren’t they saying anything?”

He received mostly positive feedback on his speech, as he made clear, before coming back to Trump: “Right now we have someone who is trying to be king, and I’m fundamentally opposed to that. And I think the City Council agrees with that, so I’m also fundamentally opposed to them.”

Nevertheless, Kluwe, who was already politically active during his career and, for example, campaigned for same-sex marriages, does not give up hope for the future: “I want to live in a world where everyone is free to be who they are.”
