NFL – Kansas City Chiefs: Travis Kelce to retire after the Super Bowl? Decision probably by March

Travis Kelce was in the 2025 Super Bowl with the Kansas City Chiefs – but it was a debacle. Rumors of an NFL retirement are getting louder, and he will probably make a decision by March.

How much longer will Travis Kelce be on the field? The now 35-year-old is visibly deteriorating, and his contract with the Kansas City Chiefs only runs until the end of the upcoming season.

Kelce also barely played a relevant role in the Super Bowl debacle against the Philadelphia Eagles.

According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, the tight end was still unsure before the Super Bowl whether he would continue playing after Super Bowl 2025. The decision would therefore also depend on the outcome of the game.

Now there was a 22:40 defeat for Kelce and the Chiefs in New Orleans.

After the embarrassment, Kelce did not comment, but quarterback Patrick Mahomes did on the future of the star tight end. “I’ll let Travis make that decision on his own,” Mahomes said at the post-match press conference.

“He has given so much to this team and the NFL. It has always been a pleasure to watch him, and not just for me. He knows he still has a lot of football left in him, you can see that. He has already done everything he can to become a Hall of Famer. Now he will spend time with his family and make this decision on his own,” Mahomes summed up.

Does it sound like a farewell between the lines?

Kelce decision by mid-March?
Travis’ brother Jason showed him how it’s done last year: the long-time Eagles center ended his career and then went on television.

Travis apparently wants to make a decision by the start of free agency on March 12. It’s possible that the duel for the Vince Lombardi Trophy was his last game.

On the sidelines of the Super Bowl’s Opening Night, however, it still sounded as if Kelce was dispelling any rumors: “I love what I do. I still have a lot of football in me. I definitely plan to play football in 2025. And here in Kansas City.”

In 2025, the tight end will put a strain on the Chiefs’ cap at over $19 million.

Travis Kelce three more years in the NFL?

He was asked specifically where he sees himself in three years. His answer? “Hopefully I’ll still be playing football then.”

In the recently concluded season, he had 97 receptions, 823 yards, and three touchdowns in the regular season. By comparison, from 2020 to 2022, Kelce broke the 1,000-yard mark each year and never caught fewer than nine touchdown passes.

Last season, however, the entire Chiefs offense around quarterback Patrick Mahomes took a step back.

Nevertheless, the tight end proved just how valuable he still is to his team in the Divisional Round of the NFL playoffs.

Against the Houston Texans, Kelce played like in his prime, finishing with seven receptions for 117 yards and a touchdown.

Taylor Swift supports Kelce’s NFL career

Off the field, Kelce is dominating the headlines because of his relationship with Taylor Swift. However, the pop star has already indicated that she would not stand in the way of her partner if he wanted to continue playing in the NFL.

“She fully encourages me to enjoy the game,” Kelce emphasized in an interview with ESPN. He had ‘received all the support in the world to continue pursuing these dreams.’

However, she said her boyfriend ending his career would be the right time. No tour is planned with Swift at the moment, so if Kelce hangs up his cleats, the two would have real time for themselves for the first time since their relationship.
