Walt Garrison, former running back of the Dallas Cowboys, has died. The former Super Bowl winner was 79 years old.
The Dallas Cowboys are mourning the death of their former running back Walt Garrison. The franchise announced that the former Super Bowl winner died on Wednesday night (local time) at the age of 79.
Garrison played for the Cowboys between 1966 and 1974 and won Super Bowl VI with the team against the Miami Dolphins in January 1972. His 4.32 yards per run still ranks fourth in franchise history, and his 3,491 rushing yards still rank ninth on the Cowboys.
Garrison already caused a stir during his football career with a career in rodeo. He reportedly competed in local rodeo tournaments on and off during his rookie season.
“I wasn’t a starter,” Garrison once said, “I carried back punts and kicks and covered on the kamikaze squad. That’s all I did. You can get hurt worse doing that than in a rodeo. I didn’t think much about it, but the Cowboys did.”
Although the team later banned him from this unusual hobby during the season, he continued in the offseason. In the process, he seriously injured his knee in 1975 and had to end his NFL career at the age of 30.
