In view of the enthusiasm for the National Football League (NFL), Commissioner Roger Goodell feels vindicated in his course to make football global.
“We are confident that we will be in Germany beyond that agreement we made just a year ago. I think we’re going to play more games there than are agreed to right now,” Goodell said in Phoenix during his annual speech before the Super Bowl.
The season game of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with Tom Brady against the Seattle Seahawks in Munich had caused a lot of furore last November, it was the first regular season game on German soil.
This year there are to be two NFL games in Germany. The Kansas City Chiefs and the New England Patriots have been confirmed as the teams. Frankfurt and Munich are being considered as venues.
Breaking all records
Nobody would have “predicted these reactions we got there. It has been very rewarding,” the 63-year-old said.
He added: “I think we will continue on this path. We’ve broken all the records in our international games this year, whether it’s spectator numbers or attendance.”
He added that they are well on their way to becoming a global sport and they will continue to put a lot of focus on this process. “We want to make NFL football a global sport,” Goodell stated.
